Subject: [MDCAROLI] Murphys in MD

Dear Jean Edwards,

Sorting out William Murphys in Caroline County can be a mess!

I'm pretty sure that none of MY William Murphys is YOUR William Murphy.  I
think that in the long run we might find that our William's are from the same
family.

In the meantime, eliminating possibilities can sometimes be almost as useful
as finding someone who can tell you exactly where your family member fits into
a puzzle.

Here are my William Murphys:

A.  George Murphy (b. 1814-15 or 1819-20 as per 1850 and 1880 Caroline Co.
census lists)
       married Elizabeth (unknown).

Children of George and Elizabeth Murphy:

       (1)  Sarah Murphy m. (unknown) Nichols.  No dates; she is listed as
Mrs. Sarah Nichols in sister Lydian Ann's obituary.

       (2)  Lillian Ann Murphy (b. 10-3-1839, MD; d. 2-17-1921, Denton,
Caroline Co., MD) married Alfred Barcus Carter (b. 3-29-1841, PA or MD; 3-29-1911,
Caroline Co., MD). (MY LINE)

       (3)  William Murphy (b. 1842-43, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co. census)

       (4)  Charles Murphy (b. 1848-49, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co. census)

       (5)  Harriett Murphy (b. 1854-55, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co. census)

       (6)  Eliza P. Murphy (b. 1859-60, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co. census;
d. 1-28-1931 as per obituary)

The following William Murphy MAY be the William Murphy listed in the
children's list above.  As noted, Lillian Ann Murphy married Alfred Barcus Carter.
Elizabeth Carter who married the William Murphy below is the sister of Alfred
Barcus Carter.  Of course, he could also be a cousin or unrelated!

B.  William Murphy (b. 1843-44, MD -- 1880 Caroline Co., MD, census)
married 1-11-1865 in Caroline Co., MD, to Elizabeth Carter (b. May 1,
1847, prob. Cecil Co., MD -- cited in Potts' "Bi-centennial Memorial of
Jeremiah Carter who came to the Province of Pennsylvania in 1682," found in 1850
Caroline Co. living with grandmother Frances Ann Barcus; found in 1860 living
with mother and step-father Wm. H. Hubbard in Caroline Co., MD)

Children of William Murphy and Elizabeth Carter:

(1) Mary E. Murphy (b. 1865-66, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co., MD, census)

(2) William W. Murphy (b. 1867-68, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co., MD, census)
married Lida (unknown) (b. 1873-74).  They had two children:
       Harry J. (b. 1894-95), Mary E. (b. 1904-05)

(3) Francis L. Murphy (male) (b. 1870-71, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co., MD,
census)

(4) Charles Murphy (b. 1871-72, MD, as per 1880 Caroline Co., MD, census)

OTHER LEADS YOU MIGHT FIND HELPFUL:

I have started searching through the Denton Journal to find my Murphys
and have many newspapers to go.  However, I do know that there was another
William W. Murphy who kept appearing in the paper as well.  He moved in and out
of Caroline Co., but, as I remember, his father was constantly in Caroline,
but I cannot be certain.  He must have been a good business man since, I think,
his business activities were sometimes mentioned.  Maybe there was even an ad
that appeared with his name.  I have not collected any of these articles yet.
________

If you can give me the dates on the tombstones of J.C., William W.,
Sarah P., and Maggie Murphy tombstones, I'll look through my Murphy newspaper
articles to see if I have any articles that match those tombstones.  Where is
Bloomery Cemetery?

______

Finally, there is another Murphy family who lived next to/across the
road from/near to the Hubbard family in 1860 census (step-father and mother of
Elizabeth Carter, George Brown Carter, and Alfred Barcus Carter).  Although
they have a father and son Williams, the son does not appear to be the William
who years later married Elizabeth, nor is there a Lillian Ann listed.  Perhaps
they are cousins to the Murphy family or families whose children married
Elizabeth and Alfred Carter.  And maybe they are cousins to your Murphy family.

Everyone in the family was born in Maryland.  The father William and daughter
Mary cannot read.  Children between ages 5 and 13 attended school.

The head of the family is William Murphy, age 45, farmer.

Presumably, the next person listed is his wife, Sarah, age 32.
However, she must have been William's second wife since some of the
children listed would be too old to be her children.  OR she lied about her age
and is 42 instead of 32.  OR the census taker made a mistake!

The children listed are:

Mary, age 22
Nancy, age 18
Georganna, age 13
Horatio, age 11
William, age 9
Sarah, age 7
Andrew, age 5
Angeline, age 4
Alexine, age 1

And I just love the possibilities of family knots --

William Barcus, maternal uncle of Alfred Barcus Carter who married Lillian
Ann Murphy listed above, was married Eliza Turner in Queen Anne Co., MD, on Jan.
27, 1847!  Related to your Zebediah?

I would also appreciate it if you would keep my family knots in mind as you
search through yours.  Let me know if you have a hint where our families
overlap.  And as soon as I get more information, I'll look to see if I have
collected newspaper articles about your possible Murphys.

Warmly,
Karen Carter

P.S.  Did you post to Caroline County, too?
