Have you tried to find a death certificate for Mina THOMAS RITCHEY / RITCHIE ? That should be available from the Office of Vital Records and is supposed to name parents and tell when and where Mina was born.

Have you checked the censuses? Those would verify race and provide lots of other important data.

Could there have been a prior marriage? FamilySearch [LDS, online, qv] has Mina M. THOMAS, 2, MD PA MD, Marshalls, Harford Co., MD, 1880. However, the other entry for her shows a different husband.

I don't understand the comma between Mina and Matilda. Was she Mina Matilda THOMAS?
