Message Board Post:

Evelyn,

I am descended from Martha (Patsy) Winston Dabney and Rev. Thomas Cooper. Thomas was a brother of Risdon (Rirdon) Cooper, Sr. Risdon married Elizabeth Mace in Carolina County, Maryland on 22 April 1890. Their mother, Taphaneues (White) Cooper and their siblings all moved to Rowan County, North Carolina in 1794 after Thomas Cooper, Sr died 15 September 1789 in Caroline County, Maryland and is believed to be buried on the home property. It is believed that they lived for awhile in White Chimney, Caroline County, Virginia on the way to North Carolina. The spelling of Taphaneues came from the memoirs of Rev. Thomas Cooper. I have found it is recorded in many various ways.

Other children of Taphaneues (White) and Thomas Cooper, Sr are Betsy, John, Lovey W., Margaret and Samuel. I have not done any research at this time on any of them. They were all born in Caroline County, Maryland.

PLEASE NOTE: The Faye Moran's website on the Jarvis family states that their parents were Elizabeth Padget and John Cooper. This is not correct. I have e-mailed them and asked for the proof and have not had a reply. This is something that I need to check out and find the proof before I can say who this John Cooper really is and if he is really related to Rev. Thomas Cooper.

Rev. Thomas Cooper's first wife was Sarah Ellis Norment. She was born in 1791 in Caroline County, Virginia. They were married 4 January 1816. Sarah died 13 May 1817. Thomas and Sarah are buried at the home place of Rev. Thomas Cooper in Clemmonsville. Their only child was William White Cooper born in 1817 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. William married Martha Young Miller, daughter of Jane (McBride) and John Miller on 4 August 1836 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. She was born 8 December 1815 in Davidson County, North Carolina and died on 10 March 1903 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina and is buried there at the Oakwood Cemetery. William White died on 8 November 1850 in Davidson County, North Carolina. His burial site is unknown a this time.

Rev. Thomas Cooper's second wife was Martha (Patsy) Winston Dabney. They were married 15 February 1820 in Greenbriar County, Virginia (West Virginia). I have gone to Greenbriar County and have found that there are no records there of their marriage. It can only be found through family records.

Thomas Cooper was born 15 December 1780 in Caroline County, Maryland and died 4 October 1829 in Clemmonsville, Davidson (Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Patsy was born 6 November 1894 in Louisa County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Smith (Winston) and Cornelius Dabney. Patsy remarried after Rev. Thomas Cooper's death to George Moyer in North Carolina. She died in September 1838 in North Carolina. PLEASE NOTE: She is buried in North Carolina at a Concord Presbyterian Church under the name of Moyer not Cooper. I have noticed that there are several people who have posted that she is buried in Albermarle County, Virginia and inquired as to where they got their information only to find that someone else gave it to them without proof. Through my research I have found that there was more than one Martha Winston Dabney in the family. One of them could have married a Cooper and is buried in Albermarle County, Virginia.

Children of Martha (Patsy) Winston (Dabney) and Rev. Thomas Cooper are:
1. Eliza (not Elizabeth) Cooper was born 21 July 1821 in North Carolina or Virginia. Death date unknown. She married James Clouse in North Carolina.
2. Alexander W Cooper (my line) was born 30 December 1823 in Greenbriar County, Virginia (West Virginia) and died 28 April 1874 in either Iredell or Yadkin County, North Carolina. He married Angelina Hattie Cooper. She was the daughter of Mary (Hill) and Hugh Gallihue Moore. They were married 11 November 1845, place unknown. Angeline (Ann) was born 10 December 1828 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. She died 2 December 1891. Angeline and Alexander are both buried at the Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Union Grove, Iredell County, North Carolina.
3. Sarah Ann Norman Cooper was born 30 April 1826 in Clemmonsville, Davidson (Forsth) County, North Carolina. She died 2 January 1847. She married Richard Goins in North Carolina.
4. Thomas Dabney Cooper was born 12 July 1829 in Clemmonsville, Forsyth) County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Caroline Wommack in Clemmonsville, North Carolina on 4 March 1856. She was born 16 November 1838 in North Carolina and is the daughter of Rebecca Ann (Rominger) and Wilson W. Wommack. Thomas Dabney Cooper died 7 August 1894. Sarah died 20 March 1912. They both died in Clemmons, Forsyth County, North Carolina and are buried at the Clemmons Baptist Church cemetery.

Hope this helps you and others. I annually go to North Carolina to do research and will be going again in June. Will let you know if I can add or correct anything. Keep in touch.

Cheryle Latour in Indiana.
