Caroline is not one of "my" counties, so I don't think I can offer much help. There is a book, "Crime and Punishment in Early Maryland" by Raphael Semmes, which might help understand how they did things back then. It won't sort out the William Dawson's though. Have you checked the tax lists, to see how many of them were there?
