For Starters (From Britannica.com):
sloop
single-masted sailing vessel with fore-and-aft rigging, including mainsail, jib, and sometimes one or more headsails. A
sloop of war was a small sloop-rigged warship, mounting about 20 guns. In modern usage, the sloop is practically
synonymous with the cutter.
Also, if you look up sloop at the web site, you will find a nice picture of the Hudson River Clearwater Sloop.
That article also has, among others, a link showing the details of a sloop.
