Speaking about Maryland Wilsons, I just happened to run across this article
from the newspaper dated, November 30, 1749, from the The Pennsylvania
Gazette.....
Maryland, Cecil County, ss.
Broke out of Cecil county goal, at the Court house, upon Elk river, in the
same county, on the Night of the 17th instant, Joseph Wilson, a Person under
sentence of death, for counterfeiting the current money of Maryland. He is
remarkably tall, with his hair cut, strong featured, a middle aged man, with his
hair cut, and generally wears a cap under his hat; was cloathed in a blue cloth
coat, with red lining and brass buttons, old red plush breeches, old thread
stockings, and pumps with brass buckles: He is a very audacious fellow, and very
talkative, was, when first taken, a schoolmaster, in Newcastle county,
Pennsylvania, but is good at many trades, viz. clock and watch making, sadlery, &c.
and as he has been at sea, may pretend he is a sailor; he is an old offender,
and well acquainted with most parts of North America, so that 'tis probable he
may change both his name and his cloaths. These are therefor, in his
Lordship's name, to command all constables and other the good people of this province,
to pursue after the said Joseph Wilson, by way of hue and cry; and the
inhabitants of the neighbouring provinces, are required to use their utmost
endeavours to apprehend and secure the said convicted felon, as they expect the same
service from us, on the like occasions. Given under my hand and seal, this 18th
day of November, 1749. THOMAS COLVILL.
Whoever shall take up the said felon, and secures him, so that he may be
delivered to the subscriber, at the goal aforesaid, shall receive as a reward TEN
PISTOLES, from MICHAEL EARLE, Sheriff.
