This John Wood who married in 1779 at around age 45.

He would have been over 70 then. Old for a bombardier or for anyone
fighting in that war. Maybe a son or even a grandson.

Wanda just posted (on the 13th) John WOOD family of St Mary Anne's
Parish which was North Elk.

I think this family or one in this parish might be more likely to be
your John WOOD, or I should day, they would be close(r) to the place
where you had the marriage of Elizabeth Wood and John Verlenden in
1809 at Marley Mills just outside of Elkton in Cecil Co. Md.

Have you been to Plats.net to see if land records there will help you?
