Subject: [MDCECIL] Old will or admin? 1690's
Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2009 21:53:44 -0400

Is it possible to obtain a copy of a will (or admin file) dated 1690,
filed in Maryland, no county, that was abstracted in one of Baldwin's
wills abstracts books?

The subject was probably no longer living in Cecil County or even in
Maryland at the time of death --had re-emigrated to his former
homeland --but since there may still have been property to be disposed
of in the province, a will (or admin) was probably filed in Maryland.

The will itself was dated 1690 (in Baldwin's Maryland wills, (Vol. 2),
but there was no second 9admin) date on the abstract, and I don't have
a firm death date for my subject. I don't think this was actually a
will, more of a notation about who the exec, was and who the witnesses
were.

I did not find an entry (card) for this person in Maryland Indexes
(Probate Records, Colonial, Index). I did find his name this evening
in Delaware Probates index, dated 1747 (way late!). Have not tried to
order that yet.

What are the number entries that follow each of the will abstracts in
Baldwin's books? Are all of these abstracts of wills, or are some
simply mentions of admin activities or probate records?

Would Skinner's Abstracts have an admin in a case like this? If so, I
am hoping the case didn't fall into the gap in the Admin files between
1689 and 1692, that Skinner appeared to have encountered (see years
covered in the title below):

Vernon L. Skinner, Jr. Abstracts of the Testamentary Proceedings of
the Prerogative Court of Maryland. Volume VI: 1686-1689, 1692-1693.
Libers: 13 (433-519), 14, 14A, 15A

This estate "event", whatever it was, could be in one of the later
books of abstracts, but not earlier than 1690. Does anyone have easy
access to Skinner's Abstracts and could check?

Thanks very much,
Liz J
