Hugh Hopewell, son of Hugh and Jane, d. 1694 in Calvert Co. His wife, Elizabeth
Hill, was the daughter of Francis Hill who d. in SMC (his will, 9/19/1696 named
his daughter, Elizabeth Hopewell and her children Hugh, Elizabeth, and Susanna).
Ann, second wife of Hugh Hopewell I married second, John Duckworth.
Richard Hopewell and Elizabeth Aisquith had a son named Thomas Francis
Hopewell. I have nothing that would indicate he was ever married. Any further
record for Jeane Cheverill??
Mary Heard, as far as I know, was the only wife of Francis Hopewell who d.
1739. They were married 10/27/1728. After his death she married second, John
Raley III who d. 1744 (son of John d. 1712) and third, Thomas Greenwell who d.
1750.
Susanna Hopewell, b. about 1730 died in 1785.
Robert Fenwick had two wives; the first being Jane Herbert whom he married by
1738.
Bennet Hopewell, b. about 1730 d. by 8/12/1801 in St. Mary's Co. His first wife
was Teresa Cooper and his second wife was Mary Ann Carberry who was living as
late as 1793. Teresa Cooper was a widow when she m. Bennet Hopewell. Her first
husband was Clement Spink.
Children of Richard Hopewell and Elizabeth Aisquith that you have listed (most
of the birthdates are too early):
1. Joseph m. Dorcas Walker.
2. Hugh, d. 1746. He had a son named James Hopewell.
3. Anna m. Philip Clarke III (son of Philip Jr. and Catherine Wilson; grandson
of Philip and Hannah Mackall).
4. Mary m. Charles Clarke Read who d. 1751. They had a daughter named Amy
Clarke Read. Charles Clarke Read was the son of John Read and Hannah Clarke and
the grandson of Philip Clarke and Hannah Mackall. MaryHopewell Read married
second, George Rogers, Jr.
5. Susanna, no further information.
6. Elizabeth Hopewell, b. bef 1741 m. George Mackall Clarke (he was b. 1730),
son of Philip Clarke, Jr. and Catherine Wilson; grandson of Philip Clarke and
Hannah Mackall.
7. Thomas Francis Hopewell d. 1747, single.
Mary Hopewell m. John Keene and had children Mary and Elizabeth. Could you tell
me the source for this?
Agnes Hopewell, dau. of Hugh and Ann, married William Jessup who d. 1727 in St.
Mary's Co.
Ann Hopewell, dau. of Hugh and Ann married Adam Bell and Thomas Aisquith as
stated.
This is where it all gets very confusing, but this is what I have:
Susanna Hopewell, b. about 1683 m. Charles King, son of William King and
Margaret____. This Charles King d. 1729. Their son was:
Charles King, Jr. who m. Susanna Coad by 1743. Their son was:
Charles King III who d. 1779. His wife was Jemima Read, daughter of John Read
and Hannah Clarke. She was named in her father's will in 1761 as Jemima King
and she was named in his administration accounts 9/3/1771. Children of Charles
King III and Jemima Read:
1. Elizabeth, b. bef 1761. Named as a granddaughter in the will of John Read
in 1761.
2. John, b. bef 1762; living 1782.
3. Charles IV, b. bef 1772 and d. by 1798 (more in a second). Not named in his
father's will, however on 6/1782: Charles King, orphan of Charles King, chose
John King, Jr. as his guardian. (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick).
4. Eleanor, b. bef 1767 and d. after 1782. She m. Robert Wiseman, 2/5/1782.
5. Arrowcage, b. bef 1772
6. Hannah Read, b. bef 1772
7. Susanna, b. bef 1772.
Charles King IV, b. bef 1772 (may not have been born until after his father's
will was made) m. Hannah Ellen_____. Charles was deceased by 1798. Their son
was Gerard King, b. by 1792 and d. 2/7/1843 who married first, Louisa Carpenter
and secondly, Jane Greenwell.
I have two good possibilities as to who this Hannah Ellen was. She could be
Hannah Long, the daughter of John Long and Barbara Read (Jemima Read's sister).
Or, she could be Hannah Clarke, the dau. of Philip Clarke III and Anna Hopewell.
Anyone got any further on this to solve the mystery? Whoever Hannah Ellen was,
she married second, Joseph Dorsey 2/13/1798.
Enough brain twisting this morning!
