This Wilkinson family below settled in Nelson Co., Ky. by 1797. I am dubious
of their supposed Fauquier Co., Va. origin for the reasons given just below.
I am also suspicious, because of their ties with some Md. Catholic families
that they may have come from there themselves. However, despite certain
Catholic ties, most of them turned out to be Methodists. I have noted the
existence of Wilkinsons in southern Md. and wonder if anyone can help me tie
this family to Maryland.
Bob Moore
George Wilkinson, b. 1738, England[?], d. 10 Dec. 1833, Nelson Co., Ky., m.
Mary Ann ___, b. ca. 1747, d. 18 March 1812, Nelson Co., Ky. Both bur. in
Wilkinson family cem., Nelson Co., Ky. There is no Wilkinson by any name in
the 1787 census of Fauquier Co., Va. George's first mention in Nelson Co.
deeds is in 1809. George is said to have been a protege in England of a Lord
Palmore, according to the biography of John W. Wilkinson on p. 300 of
Kentucky Genealogy and Biography, Vol. V (see below under Evans for complete
publishing information), but there is probably no way of confirming this.
This same biography says that he came to America sometime before the
Revolution and settled in Fauquier Co., where he lived until 1792 (but he is
not in 1787 census of that county). The family is said to have settled
briefly near Louisville, later moving to Bourbon Co. and from there to land
near the head-waters of Simpson Creek in Nelson Co. One researcher has said
without documentation that Mary Ann was a Calvert.
