Dear Betty
I am researching my husband's family. He was born in Alexandria, VA and now
lives with me in Canberra Australia. Because of the scarce resources in
Australia for suitable American records, almost all my research is done on
the net and through mailing lists. I have two close net "cousins" who
assist me with my main line research. They both live in USA. With their
assistance we have traced our Brawner line from our common family in Prince
William Co VA in the early 1800s back to "old Henry" who settled on
Mattawoman Creek. An important person in that line was the mother-in-law of
Henry Brawner (son of Henry Brawner and Elizabeth Barton) who married
Wilhemina Lloyd Cornish. Ann Lloyd was an independent thinker for her time
and caused some excellent depositions and court documents to be left for
our assistance. William Lloyd was her father. Her mother was Grissel
Johnston (of whom I can find no trace in MD other than her children's
births and suppose she was born in Scotland). Margett (Margaret) Nelson
married William Lloyd as his second wife. This was proved by various
documents sent to me by Norma Thompson.
The marriage between Margett and William Warden/Warder was gleaned from a
website dealing with the Ancestors of Susan Luticia Freeman authored by Jim
White.
My research strategy when dealing with information such as this which fits
into direct lines is to see if it fits with what I already know and is
proven and then turn it over to people who know better than I and who have
access to "hard" records. This list has proved to be excellently reliable
and helpful. Dealing with the collective knowledge and then delivering this
to my net "cousins" who try and chase it up for me.
So the answer to your question is: the reason I have any date associated
with Margett Nelson is that I got it from someone else's research and I
have posted to this list to see if anyone had anything more concrete. And
... guess what ... you did!
Thank you
I am open to any other information anyone may have about this family ...
especially regarding the name. As was pointed out to me, Warder and Warden
can be the same and a misread of the original ... or ... two totally
different families. Any suggestions are welcome.
Cheers

>I think Margaret Nelson was born later than that. As I said, I have been
having problems with the time line ....

>My guess:
>ca 1687 Barbary born to a first wife of Richard Nelson
>ca 1689 Richard married Mary Beck
>ca 1689 Margaret born
>ca 1693 Eleanor born
>ca 1695 Alice born
>ca 1698 Richard born
> 1700 William born
>ca 1702 John Nelson
>ca 1704 Ann Nelson
>
>The following from probate records for Richard Nelson recorded 18 April
1709 in Charles County Book Part 2-12, p 33:
>Daughters Margaret and Alice signed with their X's the inventory of the
estate which included five pictures and one boat and sails. Using my
timeline, they would have been ages 20 and 17 in 1709.

>Another report was filed 4 October 1710 by executrix, Mary Gray, wife of
John Gray. Legatees: Barbary Nelson paid to her husband Thomas Robins,
Elinor Nelson, Margret Nelson, Alice Nelson.

>What are your reasons for Margaret Nelson and William Warder/Warden
marrying before 1704?
