For Rick Saunders:

Thanks for your reply to my query as to when William Hungerford married Ann
Smoot. I was casting at straws as I can find no marriage record in
Maryland. I suspect the marriage was 1655 as she would be 15 yrs. old--a
more common marriage age than 14. I wonder how old he was. He came into
the Province in 1646. From England? From Virginia? And on Feb. 20,
1647/48 petitioned Margaret Brent for wages for himself and several soldiers
so I assume he was a soldier. Due to the time period, perhaps a Royalist.

There is no questrion that Ann was the daughter of William Smoot. I think
the Robert Cager "implied" relationship came about through Ann's deposition
in the court case. I first found that error in a privately published typed
"book" by Edward Kinsey Voorhees , 1931, NOTES ON THE SUTHERLAND, LATHAM
and ALLIED FAMILIES which has many mistakes. (I have a copy.) However, in
most places Ann is listed as the wife of Wm. Hungerford which is correct.

I might add, in a day when families used the same names through subsequent
generations, there are many Anns but no Roberts. (as in Cager).

The information on your web page pretty much agrees with what I have with an
exception on your Smoot information. Wm. Hungerford was deceased sometime
between 20 March 1558 and October 1658. Ann Smoot Hungerford was married to
William Barton by November as their first child Grace (another connection to
the Smoot family--this was her mother's name) was born August 26, 1659 and
died August 31, 1659. You do not list Grace. (Maryland births) and
Christopher Johnston's notes, abt. 1910. He is a Maryland Genealogist who
followed several families as did Newman.

The second child of Ann and William Barton was (Lt. Col.) William Barton
born June 29, 1662, died 1705 Prince George's County. He married Sarah
Marsham, widow of Basil Waring. Ann probably died in childbirth as William
Barton was married to his second wife, Mary ----?, by the date of birth of
his daughter Mary, born before 1665 and who married Thomas Warren.

The court entry is confusing at first glance but, as you said, studying it
carefully "figures it out." Thanks for posting that.

I find it curious that Ann's father and brother administered the land left
to young William Hungerford, born abt. 1657 rather than William Barton to
whom she was married by late 1658. Any comment?

Where do you connect to the Hungerford (or is it Smoot?) family?

I am happy to share although it looks like you have about much as much
information on the early Hungerfords as I do.
