As a follow-up to this message. I just found evidence to support my contention regarding the mother of Williamson Bruce. As I said, it didn't appear that he was Judith Townley's son, nor did it appear that he was Sarah Bagley's.

March 1741/1742: Petition of Mary Briscoe stating that Williamson Bruce, by the Court, had been put under the guardianship of John Briscoe, late of CC, dec'd, uncle to the sd. Williamson and husband to Mary. She is unwilling to keep the sd. Bruce or run the risk of his estate remaining in her hands. Ordered that the petitioner and Williamson Bruce do appear here next June Charles Co. Court. (Charles County Court Records, 1741-1743).

June 1742: Williamson Bruce, formerly under the guardianship of Mr. John Briscoe, late of Charles Co., dec'd, on his motion to this Court, is admitted to choose his guardian, and accordingly makes choice of Mr. Samuel Briscoe, who in Court here accepts thereof, and is appointed accordingly. (Charles County Court Records, 1741-1743).

Williamson Bruce was probably also the child named in the will of John Briscoe, Sr. in 1734 and his name is erroneously listed as Williamson Briscoe.

Will of John Briscoe, Charles Co., 1/13/1733-4/8/1734. Wife: Eleanor, Exec., dwelling plantation during her life and at her decease to son Philip and heirs and 1/3 personal estate. Son: John and heirs, "Baltimore's Gift" where he now lives on the condition that he make over his right in the third part of land belonging to father Williamson to sons Samuel and Hezekiah and their heirs and personal estate. Son: James and heirs, tract where mother Susanna lives. Daughter: Mary Haw and heirs, 134 ac. in St. Mary's Co. and personal estate. Son: Samuel and grandson, Williamson Briscoe (should say Williamson Bruce), personal estate. Residue of personal estate to 5 (sic) children: Samuel, Philip, James, Hezekiah and daughters Martha Briscoe and Elizabeth Briscoe. Wit: James Swaine (Swann?), John Hayes, Andrew Chunn, Margaret Llewellen, Richard Bucknell.

Williamson Bruce, son of John Bruce and ____Briscoe (daughter of John Briscoe, Sr. and Eleanor Williamson), was born between 1723-1728. He was born after 1722 (the year Judith Townley died) and before 1728 (by law, he had to be at least 14 to select his own guardian, which he died in 1742). After his father's death, he was placed under the guardianship of John Briscoe, Jr. (husband of Mary Hanson) who died in 1742 and then he selected his uncle, Samuel Williamson Briscoe as his guardian. Williamson Bruce then went on to marry Ruth ____. They lived in Frederick County where he died in 1752. Ruth then married Gerard Briscoe (second cousin of Williamson Bruce).

Will of William Bruce, Gent., Frederick Co., 11/18/1756-12/30/1756. Wife: Ruth. Children: John and Charles Bruce. Exec: Friend, Jonathan Wilson. Wit: Joseph and Sarah West, Elizabeth Burton. Jonathan Wilson resigns as Exec. in favor of Ruth Bruce, widow of William Bruce. 12/30/1756, widow election.

Admin. accts. of Williamson Bruce, Frederick Co., 11/12/1760; Exec., Ruth Briscoe, wife of Gerard Briscoe (Skinner).

One source says that his wife was Ruth Perry, b. 10/30/1732, dau. of James Wilson Perry and Rebecca Harris, but I think it's more likely that she was Ruth Winter, daughter of Walter and Catherine Winter of Charles County. Catherine____ Winter/Price named a grandson, John Bruce in her will in 1771.

Will of Catherine Price, Charles Co., 10/18/1771-8/29/1772. To: William Winter, son of William. Grandsons: John Bruce; Ignatius, son of John Winter; Walter, son of William Winter. Granddaughters: Ann Winter, dau. of William Winter; Elizabeth Bruce Winter, dau. of John Winter. To: Elizabeth Milstead. To: Walter Winter, son of John. Execs: Sons, William and John Winter. Wit: Sophia Gray, Lydia Gray, John Elgin.

I found the Bruce grandchildren named in the will of Sarah (Bagley) Bruce/Yates. They were right under my nose. William Bruce, son of Sarah, married Elizabeth Reeder. I already knew they had a son named William, but it appears there was one named John. I can account for only one of the four "younger" granddaughters--Henrietta.

After looking at everything over and over again, I really don't think that Williamson Bruce was Sarah's son. He died 1760 in Frederick Co., MD. He did have children and none are named in Sarah's will. He wasn't Judith's son either, so I tend to believe that John Bruce was married a second time, after the death of Judith Townley, had Williamson and that wife died, then he married Sarah.

Below is how I now show the descendants of Sarah.
