In the course of familiarizing myself with online records at The
Library of Virgina I came across this record:
http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/disk18/CR/03181/0002.tiff

Virginia Colonial Records Project
H.M. Customs & Excise Library Class 1486.
Scottish Board Minutes, 11 December 1749 - 23 January 1755

Minute about a petition of Alexander SPALDING, Robert FERGUSON and
James GUTHRIE, Dumfries Merchants, for debentures to be granted on
some tobacco exported and damaged. (1 page)

Robert FERGUSON is of interest because he might be a documented link
connecting a Charles County Maryland family in the tobacco trade to
the FERGUSSON of Craigdarroch. There are very likely living males of
the Maryland family whose DNA may ultimately be a standard by which
persons with oral histories connecting them to the Craigdarroch line
can test their tradition. More on the Maryland and Craigdarroch
families are here:

Cheers,
Colin Ferguson
