On July 5, 1857, the first wooden bridge was put in
operation over the Potomac River from Berlin (Brunswick)
to Lovettsville, VA.
On July 5, 1862, C. Thomas Kemp, owner of Kemp's
Department Store on The Square Corner in Frederick,
was born. He died July 1, 1930, of Parkinson's Disease
at his home at 208 Rockwell Terrace in Frederick . He
was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
On July 5, 1876, Hiram Winchester, the president of the
Frederick Female Seminary until 1865, and the man for
whom Winchester Hall on East Church Street in Frederick
is named, died at Cambridge, MD, at 72. He came to
Frederick in 1838 and started a girl's school.
On July 5, 1967, the demolition of the 97-year-old main
building at the Maryland School for The Deaf was begun.
