My Philip Hoff was living in Frederick Co., near Woodsboro, as early as 1768. It
is unknown if he was actually from the area or moved there after marrying Rosina
Feuerstein from York Co., PA. He was born circa 1743 and he and Rosina would join
the congregation of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Woodsboro. There are found many
other Hoffs so it is possible he was from the area. After the birth of three of
his children there, the couple moved to Lovettsville, Loudoun Co., VA about 1780
where too are found many Hoffs (Huffs), They would die in Loudoun and their family
mostly migrated to Muskingum Co., OH along with many other Loudoun Co., families.
Phillip's son Henry took over most of his father's affairs and land holdings in
Loudoun Co., VA and Frederick Co., MD. It is unknown where Henry was located after
1820 but one possibility was West Virginia. Phillip's will gives an account of his
land in Maryland and payment of a debt in Maryland currency.

Jacob Hoff might be a brother to Phillip as in 1778, Frederick Co, MD, Phillip and
Jacob Huff together took the Oath of Allegiance (p 23, Brumbaugh, Revolutionary
Records of Maryland.)

I have been looking for Phillip's parents for quite a while. It is unclear how he
met his wife whose parents lived in Paradise township, York Co., PA. There was
another Hoff family living near them in York but they had a son named Phillip that
was not a possibility, too young and died too early. It is interesting that many
of Rosina Feuerstein's brothers also moved to Frederick Co. MD about the same time
after the death of their father. She married Phillip Hoff June 1, 1768 supposedly
in Maryland only 5 months after the death of her father in York Co., PA in January
of that year. I can't say how they met and married so fast.
