On October 4, 1777, Philip Greenwood, 22, of
Frederick, outran a British soldier, was grazed in the
temple by grapeshot, but survived the Battle of
Germantown. He died in Owen County, Indiana, in
1842. (Submitted by Dixie Greenwood Richardson,
of Indianapolis.)
On October 4, 1852, the Mt. Olivet Cemetery was
incorporated with William J. Ross as president.
On October 4, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln visited
Frederick after touring the South Mountain and Antietam
Battlefields. He addressed crowds twice and was in town
for a total of 35 minutes. He visited a wounded General
George L. Hartsuff at Mary Tyler Ramsey's house on
Record Street.
On October 4, 1882, John V. Atanasoff, who is credited
with the invention of the computer, was born in Hamilton,
N. Y. He died June 15, 1995, of a stroke. He and his wife
lived on their New Market farm for many years prior to his
death.
