On November 5, 1781, John Hanson, of Frederick, was elected by Congress as
the first "President of the United States in Congress Assembled."


On November 5, 1912, Dr. Franklin Buchanan Smith, the first health officer
for both Frederick City and Frederick County, died of typhoid fever. He was
buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.


On November 5, 1963, 9-year-old Donald K. Smith, son of Floyd and Marie
Smith of Old Annapolis Road, was critically injured when attacked by three
dogs belonging to Gilmore "Jake" Hamilton.


On November 5, 1973, Claude Delauter went to bed unaware that within 24
hours he would become the first African-American elected to Frederick City's
Board of Aldermen. Elizabeth Burkett became the first woman elected to the
Board of Aldermen in the same election.


On November 5, 1991, Frederick County voters rejected a change in county
government from the commissioner form to the charter form by a 3-1 margin.


On November 5, 1994, Dr. George R. Houston Jr., the endowment fund manager
for Georgetown University, was installed as the 23rd president of Mt. Saint
Mary's College in Emmitsburg.
