On December 4, 1844, John Columbus Motter, who would become a county state's
attorney and an associate judge of The Sixth Judicial Circuit Court, was
born in Emmitsburg. He died June 12, 1915, of a cerebral hemorrhage and was
buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

On December 4, 2005, The Historical Society of Frederick County, at its
annual holiday party, gave special recognition to those who had a hand in
the recovery of a pewter flagon, made by Johann Christoph Heyne in the 18th
Century, stolen 30 years earlier from the society's headquarters.
