On September 23, 1813, Dr. John Hanson Thomas, longtime president of Farmers
& Mechanics National Bank in Frederick, who on several occasions used his
own wealth to tide the bank over difficult times, was born.

On September 23, 1833, President Andrew Jackson, in a recess selection,
appointed Roger Brooke Taney as Secretary of The Treasury. When the U. S.
Senate reconvened, it rejected the nomination, the first such cabinet
appointment in U. S. history to be rejected.

On September 23, 1991, W. Milnor Roberts, a local lawyer and former
Frederick City attorney, was appointed a judge of the Frederick County
District Court.
