To my friend Edith Chaney, et al,

The following references for military lots are located in the Garrett County clerks office.

1. Abstract of Title - Compiled by Hiram P. Tasker ( Includes the name of the person the lot was awarded to and many have
lengthy chain of title of others that had title to the property to about 1890.)
2. Abstract of Title ( Tracts Resurveyed) - Compiled by Hiram P. Tasker
3. Description of Military Lots and Tracts. ( Mainly pins, compass readings and distance or length of readings or bearings)
4. Surveyors Returns ( Shows maps and plots of the resurvey of virtually all original surveys. All the whimsical names are included in the resurvey i.e "Bad Is The Best Of It", "False Alarm", Milk And Honey, "Blooming Rose".

Abstract of Title includes most of the lots. Numbered from 1 to 4000+. About 400+ pages in all. In the front cover of the book there is a lengthy news article. It reads in part:

"An Open Letter, Cumberland, Maryland, July 4, 1891 - To the Honorable, The County Commissioners for Allegany and Garrett Counties."

"It becomes my duty to explain the present status of the untaxed land in these two counties belonging to non-resident owners and what is necessary to be done in order that they may be fully defined, located and legally assessed."

If the above excerpt and volumes are not micorfilmed - they should be. With the interest shown to date, the volumes will deteriorate with use. They are not easy to read. Better take some MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat) with you because you are going to be there for awhile.
