You said:
"...The poem on Barbara Fritchie speaks of the "clustered spires" of

Actually the poem, "Barbara Fritchie", by John Greenleaf Whittier reads:
~
".....The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland...."
~
Frederick is referred to as "Frederick town" (though not as Fredericktowne)
at least three times elsewhere in the poem, which is probably what your were
thinking of. Example, the last line reads:
"....And ever the stars above look down
On thy stars below in Frederick town!...."

Barbara Fritchie, a legendary 95 year old American heroine, reputedly defied
the Confederate troops under Stonewall Jackson as they advanced through
Frederick, Md in 1862. Her house was rebuilt in 1927 as a replica of the
house destroyed by the repeated flooding of nearby Carroll Creek.
We used to own some rural property near Frederick, Md. and I once had to
memorize the poem "Barbara Fritchie" for a high school literature
program.....so forgive me for being nit-picky on the details!{;o)
(I'm in my fifties and can still recite that poem by heart!)
Bye for now,
Kathleen
