Good point. The Hessian prison was located in Hagerstown MD and the
prisoners were free to come and go during the war -- they were not getting
paid once captured and were not a threat. When the war was over, very few
returned to EUR....they stayed in MD, PA and to a lesser extent VA. Hence a
large GER population in central/western MD.

Imagine what you would do if you picked the wrong side of the
Revolutionary War. All your property was seized, for starters. One can
well imagine that you would not be all that popular in your community
after the War. Striking out for the frontier might pose an attractive
option. What is now Garrett County was certainly on the frontier at the
end of the Revolutionary War. I wonder if loyalists might be among the
pioneer settlers of Garrett County.

This is what George Fazenbaker did. He was a Hessian soldier fighting
for the Britissh when he deserted or was captured in 1781. By 1787, he
was settled in what is now Garrett County.
