Lois,
Hoses are the thing today. Just over the Pennsylvania line in Somerset
County, the Amish have a very big maple syrup/sugar business going. You'll
soon be seeing all the sugar maples connected with plastic tubing and
eventually the tubing leads to a shed with big barrels inside. Looks like
something from another planet, like trees being fed intraveniously. Almost
spoils the fun and enjoyment of eating the syrup.

In small groves like that of Margaret Hershberger's in Bittinger, they still
hang out the buckets.

I'm planning to sell this place soon and it's got a lot of sugar maples on
the 10 acres. Well, maybe not so many after the ice storm in October.
