If they say not to do it, then paraphrase. Neither information or ideas
can be copyrighted. Only form of presentation that has some artistic or
literary content. But do recognize the concept of derivative works.
There is a long history of using written works. Also be careful of
pictures, restrictions are a little greater
because separating artistic content is from information and ideas is
difficult. But the fairuse doctrine
provides considerable room to dodge. A traditional provision: for direct
classroom or instructional use a
teacher may provide each student with one copy and the teacher may also
have a copy for use in the
instructional environment. The copy for research is still recognized.
Also the archival copy to avoid
loss if the source is destroyed. The latter has been upheld even for
electronic works.
