Good Morning All
I have been watching the C&O info coming in and couldn't find anything but
in reading last evening I found the following in Journal of the Allegghenies
Vol XVII 1981
The C&O Canal was started July 4, 1828
It was completed 1850
It stopped operating 1924 and was 185 miles long & 6 feet minimum deep.
There were 75 plus locks. The speed of a boat abt 2 mph loaded and 4000
mules in use.
The boating season was abt. nine months. The mule driver got $10 per month.
The Paw Paw Tunnel was 3/4 mile long. The condition of the tunnel 100%
intact and it took 8 yrs to build tunnel to abt 1 ft a day.
The boats built in early years were built mostly in Cumberland.
Another book I was reading was something about Twin Rocks? and Harpers
Ferry. This could have been where it started. I don't have the book here
at the present time and didn't write it down and I don't know a lot about
geography. Shirley Drent
