Lou,
Ethel Fike Friend wrote her books based on Church records and school
records and personal experience, for the most part. I have both books
you mentioned, and I would not sell them for anything. I bought mine
from Ethel Fike Friend's son, Robert, who had recently retired as an
attorney in Parkersburg, WV. He sold them to me for the original cost
plus postage. I believe all libraries in the Garrett/ Preston County
area have copies of the book, as does the University of West Virginia.
At one time Sand Spring Church was selling both books as a fund raiser.
I wonder if that $50 price was an online price.
Ethel lived in the area about which she was writing. We see
everything through her eyes, and she lets the reader know that. I must
look through them again, to see if she used much hearsay.
I have a wonderful picture of a stone hauling group gathered at the
home of Ethel's parents when she was a young girl. My uncle, who now
owns that property, helped me to identify almost everybody in the
picture. Do you have that picture? Perhaps some of your relatives are in
this picture. My grandather, Tarleton Humberson, was in it, as were many
Fikes, a couple of Taylors, and several others. Ethel is standing on the
porch, holding her little brother.
Delores
