Lois, I am glad I wasn't the only one who had trouble understanding Hoye's
listing for the David Vansickle family.
I misread the part about "He m. (2) Catherine Harding" and thought it
referred to Joshua Friend's second marriage, not David's second marriage. Of
course Joshua Friend didn't marry twice. Hoye was listing the wife and
children of DAVID VANSICKLE'S second marriage to Catherine Harding (I have
also seen her name as Harden).
Where you read "Married (3) Elizabeth Geary".... it reads "John Vansickle,
son of David, resided on the Sickle Hill farm. His third wife was Elizabeth
Geary. His children were: David, Elias, Charles, Jacob, Lott and Chester F."
I believe Hoye is saying Elizabeth Geary was the wife of John Vansickle and
John was the son of David Vansickle.
Thankfully Wendy Mammoliti set me straight on my mix-up yesterday.
Wendy also pointed out there was an interesting story about David's
daughter, Sarah Ann Vansickle, in "Indian Blood" by Evelyn Olsen......
"Indian Blood" by Evelyn Olsen, p. 155
Early in her life Sarah Anne had an unusual adventure-a journey in a market
basket. In 1823 her grandmother, Elizabeth Frazee Enlow, carrying the
basket with its treasure in front of her, rode to Maryland from Belmont
County, Ohio. Mrs. Enlow had gone to the western state to be with her
daughter Deborah, at the time of childbirth. The daughter had died, and the
baby, at six weeks of age, was brought by the brave grandmother the long
ride home over the National Road.
The child's father, David Van Sickle, the second, moved back to Maryland
later, when business opportunities there increased. By that time he had
married Catherine Harden, sister to Andrew Friend's wife, (Magog) and the
families saw a good deal of each other. The two Harden sister were
remembered as wearing white linen kerchiefs over their dresses, a
distinctive touch in the locality. The peak of the kerchiefs reached down
their backs and down to their full gathered white aprons in front.
Now seventeen years have passed since the ride from Ohio, and Sarah Ann had
come of marriageable age."

Talks
about the David Vansickle family Bible . . . " David resided at the
Vansickle settlement on Buffalo, where he resided until 1833 when he
secured the
Sickle Hill farm, now owned by his grandson, John Vansickle, who is also in
possession of the David Vansickle Bible."
"David Vansickle II married (1) ___________, 1816, Deborah Enlow, their
children were:
(1) John, b. Sept 8, 1817, d. June 17, 1894, m. Elizabeth Geary.
(2) Mariane (Polly), b. June 9, 1819, m. Solomon Frey.
(3) Elizabeth, b. April 8, 1921, m. Andrew Ringer.
(4) Sara Anne, b. July 9, 1823, m. Joshua Friend.
Married (2) Catherine Harding, b. June 24, 1800, Children: [7]
Married (3) Elizabeth Geary [same name as his first son's wife]. Could it
be
that he married his daughter-in-law? They had 12 children?.
