I would like to introduce Genie Ragan to this list. She recently join and
yet she has already contributed by posting something twice. She has been a
very helpful and active participant on the Allegany County mailing list for
years. Many of you may also belong to the Allegany List and do not need an
introduction as you may have already benefited from her enthusiasm and
willingness to provide lookups or answer your inquiries on or off the list.

You may like to investigate one or two of the research websites that Genie
has graciously dedicated all her FREE time to. There you may copy all the
information and pictures FREE which is great because it was donated FREE. I
will say it's true you will not find recipes on her Genealogy Research
sites.

But great news Genie has offered you even more of her time FREE. Imagine
having all your recipes, photo's and family histories complied, arranged and
sent to a publishing house to be printed with photos, bound professionally
and shipped to your door. Now would you expect this FREE?

I read no mention of a handling fee or anything other than what would be a
reasonable estimated price of publishing and shipping of a book that is
produced by a publisher that handles reunion type publications which there
is a minimum run of 50 books.

I know the subject of a cook book was asked not to be discussed on the list
and that it is not meant as a soapbox, for that part I apologize.

If my cousin Genie didn't take offense I did.

No offense Genie, but you're a stranger to me.
(I checked the archives and this was only the second post you seem to have
made to the list.)
You said this cook book:
"...would to some extent preserve family history..."
I agree.
In fact, I have a family genealogy site myself that features a section for
donated family recipes which are FREE to all for downloading & copying.
I also know of other genealogy sites which also post donated family recipes.
I visited both your genealogy sites and unless I missed them, I didn't see
any family recipes posted at them.
.
Here's my idea. How about the members of the Garrett Co. list donate their
family recipes (just like they do photos, family histories, etc) to a
Garrett Co.related genealogy website where the recipes, like their photos,
histories, etc. would be FREE to be down loaded and copied by others EXCEPT
for use in a commercial publication?
Call me old fashioned, but unless it's to raise money for a worthy cause, I
just don't believe in selling something that is given to you for free..
.
Bye for now,
Kathleen

> What would you think of us compiling a Cookbook of Western MD/WV/PA/VA
recipes? My idea is to include all our favorite recipes from Grandma/Mom
et al. Those comfort type foods typical of the region. Rivels, scrapple,
puddin', chicken & dumplings, apple pan dowdy etc.
> Depending on the number of books printed, (and the number of pages) the
price would run between $15 to $20 per copy. It could go higher if we did
over 100 pages or so.
> I will take on the task of collecting the recipes (from all of you),
edit/transcribe them and get the publishing going. We can add
stories/photos regarding the family or person from whom the recipe
originated. This would to some extent preserve family history along with
some really great recipes!
> Please let me know your thoughts and/or start sending in those recipes!
