Thank you all for the information on Little Brown Lake. Yes Connie I have
seen Avilton/Lonaconing road on the map. I planned to explore that way this
year. I've driven down The Beall School road twice but at the time I didn't
know it was once a stomping ground for my Crowe/Winebrenner Ancestors! I
discovered how beautiful it is back that way when I was up to Blocker
Cemetery.
Not afraid to knock on a door but am terrified of the bear thing! Think I'd
better not take food, just some water. I am afraid I can't share your
confidence about the bears.
I think I've been to the swamp unless there is more than one. It was in
Finelz but that's in the other direction from Beall Scholl Road. I had an
excellent guide with me, Kathy Winebrenner! The swamp was where we walked
in and viewed the old cemetery called Wolf Gap. It's off Cranberry road and
I think is referred to as Cranberry Swamp but the area was named Finzel
Nature Reserve. There was an old foundation of a house there. Very
interesting, there was the remains of an old wringer washer in the basement,
it had a double tub. I've never seen one like that...should I admit my
mother had a wringer washer <grin>. The area back there is very beautiful
too an I might add that that's were wild things roam too. We saw some
mighty big paw prints which I think were mountain lion size or do you call
them Panther back east? This city gal might do best remaining in the car:)
You think the Finzel fire alarm is loud...I hate to think of what I might
omit if I came upon something!
I have a good idea how to find the Lake now. How about the history? Anyone
know someone I could write to about it? I'm interested in the original
inhabitants maybe late 1700's to late 1800's.
Carol
Just called Larry Maxim, in charge of the Savage River mountains,
forests..or he used to be. He had a cold tonight so didn't want to drag out
my questions.
Old Brown Lake is off the Avilton/Lonaconing Road. Do you know where that
is, Carol. If not get a friend to take you there. It's Beall School Road
south to Old Frostburg Road to stop sign, go left to top of hill to Stone
Quarrey. Take the small dirt road across from the Quarry. Lake is about
half a mile from the Quarrey.
Now, I just might have missed a thing or two so take food and water with
you...
Never be afraid to knock on someone's door and ask for directions. Or to
stop another car for the same reason. Watch out for Bears, they won't tell
you where the lake is, but they probably go there to drink so you could just
follow them. They won't hurt you.
Remember, in Garrett County you can get lost but you'll eventually come out
some place you recognize. I'm wondering if this lake is part of Finzel
Swamp?
Connie
