I'm trying to locate the burial location for the following person:
John Henry DEWITT
b. 1835, Allegany Co., MD
d. about 1852-1853, Allegany Co., MD.
John was the son of Joseph DEWITT and Elizabeth CASTEEL. He married about
1851, Margaret HAUK, and I believe these are my 4th great-grandparents.
I'm trying to work backward in my research from what I know, which is that
my 3rd great-grandmother was Mary E. DEWITT, b. abt. 1851. Her mother,
Margaret, married Barnabas DEWITT when Mary was about nine years old in
Selbysport twp., Allegany Co. Up until recently, I did not have any idea
who Margaret's first husband (Mary's father) was, but in carefully searching
census and church records, I've put some clues together that indicate that
it was John Henry DEWITT.
Barnabas would have been John's cousin - their fathers were brothers. My
theory, though unproven, is that John died soon after the birth of his
daughter, Mary E., and Margaret married Barnabas about seven years later.
If I could find John's burial location and possibly his death date, it would
help to prove this theory.
Since it is known that Barnabas, his uncle Joseph, and his brother Peter
were all Methodist ministers, I'm theorizing that John was quite possibly
buried in a Methodist church cemetery near the Friendsville-Selbysport area.
However, I've not been able to find him so far. If anyone knows a resource
that might help me, I would be very grateful.
Sincerely,
Lynn
