Sean,
If you can get to the MD Land Records site there are two deeds for John
Dixon, 1811 and then several for John Dixon 1814 and after. I saw one with
John and Drusilla.
MDLandRec.net
I think that will get you to the site.
You have to sign up, get a password (they email it to you) but it is free.
There is a Lot of good information in those deeds.
Pat

Subject: [MDGARRET] John Dixon of Ryan's Glade 1780-1813
I'm seeking any references to my ancestor who was in Ryan's Glade on the
1800 census, and over in Mineral County on the 1810. He moved to Ohio about
1813. It is believed John's brother was Joseph "Josie" Dixon of Mineral. The
father of these two men was supposedly also named John.
On 14 Feb 1797 a John Dixon was issued 100 acres of land for his service,
(Lot 1985, Warrant number 11,134). He is listed as "John Dixon, 1st". Does
this imply there is a son of the same name? This lot appears to have been
just north of Swanton, MD. This is close to where the brothers Joseph and
John Dixon appear shortly after, but it is not known if this John Dixon is
the father of John and Joseph.
Also I found a history of the Tichenals on the internet that contains this
passage:
"Origin of the Chestnut Grove Church:
Mount Zion is the second oldest church and school community in Garret
county, MD. It was established during the four-year ministry of Bishop
Asbury of the Methodist Church in the mountains of West Maryland and (West)
Virginia 1781-1784. A log building was erected at mount Zion east of
Backbone Mountain near Lick Creek for use as both a local church and school.
The 1788 records list William Honis and Joseph Paugh, James Gilmore, Thomas
Madden, John Price, John Sheets, John Ryan, John Dixon, Evan Turner and
Happy Trubee as men who built the old log building."
John, Jr would have only been about nine years old when this church was
built, so there is little chance it's him being referred to. I believe this
may be his father. Since the 1790 census returns for this area have not
survived, I only have the 1800 census to work with.
On the 1800 Census for Glade, Allegany, MD, John Dixon, Jr, with his wife
Drusilla Harvey and one child, is listed as a neighbor to many of the men
who helped build the Chestnut Grove Church with his presumed father. They
appear in order listed on the census: The Paughs, John Gilmore, (Henry
Black), Happy Trubee, Evan Turner, (Elizabeth Edwards), John Dixon.
There is no listing on the 1800 census for John Dixon, Sr. He may have died
by that time.
Apart from a few land transactions from the early 1800's, that's all I have
on John Dixon, Jr until he moved to Ohio and then Illinois.
If anyone has come across any John Dixons in records prior to 1813, I would
love to hear about it!
Cheers,
Sean Dixon
