Dear Celeste,
Thanks so much for bringing this topic up. Just recently someone asked
me to do
a tombstone lookup for them in a cemetery in SC. The person who
requested this
lookup lived out west where (for the most part) people weren't buried in their
churchyards they were buried in the county cemetery. Well, when I got
to the
cemetery she told me to search, I knew (by my sister's account and by
all of the
Prince Hall masonic symbols), that this church was an African American
church and
cemetery. While all other places may have desegregated, the churches never
seemed to do this. And, they certainly hadn't done so when this person was
buried.
I did not know if she knew this or not. I didn't know how to ask. You see,
just down the road was a cemetery and church with an almost identical
name and
when I went to look there for her ancestors I found a bunch of them,
though not
the ones she had asked about. I wanted to tell her that if her ancestor was
caucasian then she probably had made a mistake on the name of the
church/cemetery. If, on the other, hand she was looking for African American
ancestors then I would have contacted the church and gone through their records,
because there were many tombstones that had worn away and didn't have anything
readable on them. But I wasn't going to do all of that without knowing
for sure
I was in the right place. All it would take was a simple question, but it's
such a hard QUESTION!!!
I know my knuckle headed ancestors were running around the South for a long
time, and someday I'm going to find my "Black Campbells" that my graddad talked
about from GA when the Campbells had a plantation and named all the African
American babies Campbell. I'm going to feel like I owe an apology, and yet
I'll still feel like we are kin. It really is a difficult thing to deal with
and everyone is so opinionated about it. I just don't know what protocol would
be proper and respectful, but would still convey information that could be
crucial.
Has anyone ever encountered this?
