Hello Sharon,
A reprint of History of Kent County, Maryland mentions the Whaland
name. One is Peregrine Whaland who served in Captain Hynson's Company
Twenty-First Regiment of Maryland's Militia under Colonel Philip A. Reed
during the 1814 Battle of Caulk's field in Kent County. There was a Doctor
Thomas H. Whaland who held land near Chestertown and "in 1861 a regiment of
Federal soldiers encamped on the land of the late Dr. Whaland.". The exact
location and information about the doctor is not given. This book is very thin
on details, but perhaps this tiny bit will help.
