I have an article I will be willing to fax (too large for AOL) from the New
Carrollton County News on Wed. Dec. 29,1971 by staff writer Karen Hosler on the
history of Lanham, MD. It is one of a two part series. I do not have the 2nd
part.Paul Trueman Lanham was the source of most of the info. He states Lewis
Lanham settled in the area in 1812. One of his sons Trueman Lanham I, married
Mary and Beall. He acquired about 600 acres including most of what was Lanham
in 1971.He married 2nd, Mary Ellen Tucker of Riva,MD.
It was she who donated the land to the Baltimore-Potomac Railroad for the
Lanham Station. The route opened on 7-2-1872 and Lanham station was born. More is
written including many Lanham family members being buried in the Whitefield
Cemetery.
I also have a Boone Co., IN biography on Joseph Malcolm Lanham in 1895.Joseph
was the son of Pleasant and Jane (McCowen) Lanham of Botetourt Co., VA.
Pleasant, in turn, was the son of William Lanham. Jane was the daughter of James
and Cynthia (Castor) McCowen. The bio was published in 1895 in Portraits &
Biographical Records of Boone & Clinton, Counties by A.W. Bowen & Co.,Chicago.
Descendents of Joseph Malcolm Lanham still live in Markleville, Zionsville,
and Lebanon, IN areas. Another group of Lanham's of this branch found their way
to
the area of Traverse City, MI.
