Surname: MATTINGLY
-------------------------

Bonita, it seems you may have unfortunately gotten hold of Rev. J. F. Mattingly's
book on the Mattingly family. To be accurate there were no three brothers
who came to this country. There was Thomas, his wife Elizabeth, and four
children: Judith "Turner" (already married), Elizabeth, Thomas, II and
Cezar. Rev. Herman E. Mattingly, in his book, "The Mattingly Family in
Early America" covers this little family quite well and includes much data
to support his findings. There is some speculation that the family first
arrived in Virginia and that Cezar was born there. No justification for
this assertion has been brought forth however and I personally discount
it.

I too am a descendant of John. Regretfully, we have only managed to trace
two of his sons, John Baptist and Richard. Besides the book by Rev. Mattingly
I would suggest that you examine two web sites.

http://genealogy.org/~pat/genweb.htm
http://wwwfamilytreemaker.com/users/m/a/t

The first site is by Pat Place whose wife is a Mattingly descendant of
Cezar. The second is my site. Once at the page above, click on my name
near the bottom of the page - William R. Mattingly.

Pat's site has a searchable database which is very useful. Mine, regretfully,
does not. I maintain two files; one for Thomas, II and one for Cezar. I
found it was easier to negotiate these files if they were smaller, hence
the split. I would be remiss if I did not tell you that I have based my
data on Books, the research of many cousins and my own research (there
doubtless are errors). Several hundred folks have contributed to my collection
and I look forward to the opportunity to exchange data with you and anyone
else interested in this family. You'll see at least one other Mattingly
file at my site and sometimes others. The reason is that there are several
loose persons that we haven't been able to connect to the mainstream of
Mattingly's so I include these other files to encourage discussion. Sometimes
it pays off.

Please don't think for one minute that I present myself as an expert on
this family of ours. There are numerous persons much better equipped for
that title and I, not at all. I am happy to help where I may however, and
look forward to hearing from you. I may be found at

Before I forget, there is one other location I highly recommend and that
is Rootsweb itself:

http://www.rootsweb.com

Here you will find a place to enter a surname and examine the data posted
by a multitude of others on numerous different families. I have a couple
there but not the lines of Thomas, II and Cezar at this time. Good luck
and please let me hear from you.

William
