Thanks for the info. Not all French's are related-since French was often
given to families from France who settled in the British Isles. I have no
idea which line the VA Daniel French is tied to-a question for the French
list!

Chip,
I live on Mason Neck, VA just south of Mt. Vernon. The Geo. Mason
Plantation, Gunston
Hall is on this Mason Neck peninsula. We are directly across the Potomac
River from
Mattawoman Creek, in Chas. Co., MD. I am a minor archivist for very local
history
(its all in my attic) and the FRENCH family, along with the Masons &
Washingtons were
prominent families locally in the mid 1700's. Daniel FRENCH is mentioned in
a book by
Beth Mitchell, titled Beginning at the White Oak. There is also a large map
of the
period that accompanies it. There is also a book by Mary Edith Sprouse
called,
Colchester, Colonial Port on the Potomac.
I purchased both at the Fairfax County Gov't Center in their book store.
Daniel
FRENCH was also on the vestry at (Ibelieve)Pohick Church. I believe there
are FRENCHs
buried in the Pohick Church Cemetery. It is located in Lorton on the corner
of Rte. 1
& Telegraph Rds. He was definitely on vestry of the Truro Parish in the
area. Geo.
Mason & Geo. Washington were also. He did a lot of trading at the town of
Colchester,
also here on Mason Neck. Colchester had a couple of devastating fires in
colonial
times, so there is really nothing of the old town left but a lot of history
&
archaeology.
I don't know where you live, but it is definitely worth your while to come
to Fairfax
City, VA and make 2 stops. One at the Gov't Center to check out the local
historical
publications (not a big selection but will have what you are looking for)
and then to
the VA Room at the main branch library in Fairfax City.
As a native Marylander, now living 'on the other (VA) shore' I have come to
find so
much traversing across the Potomac throughout history.
Check it out...good luck.
