Ok Jerry, straighten me out. According to the Will of Robert Sr.
written 19 Aug 1721 and probated 31st Jan 1725. Which means Robert Sr. Died
before 31st Jan 1725. There is a codicil dated 10 months after he died and
will probated.
This I question.
In the will the statement "Jany Gough and Elinor, wife of Henry Greenwell."
This statement could be taken two ways, Jany Gough and Elinor (implied
Gough), wife of Henry Greenwell.
or Jany Gough and Elinor (implied Clark), wife of Henry Greenwell.
Why did he not say Elinor Greenwell? The abstract leaves questions.
It is probably much mor clear in the original document.
Who was Jany Gough?? Was she a daughter married to a Gough?

I agree with you that Henry Greenwell had to be born about 1700, NOT 1710,
in order to be married by 19 Aug 1721.

Now Jerry, I am new to this line of Clark's. I am not questioning what you
have.
I am trying to get it right in my mind.
John

Dear John,

there are alot of books out there on Greenwell family that give dates
for these children but the dates are all wrong.

Robert Clarke wills Liber 18 Folio 438, 1721 St. Mary's County, Maryland
Clarke, Robert, St. Mary's Co., 19th Aug., 1721; 31st Jan., 1725.
To eldest son Thomas and hrs., land he now lives on in "Beaver Dam
Manor"; personality. To son Robert, "Addition"; and personality. To
little son Benjamin and hrs. (son of wife Elizabeth), dwelling
plantation ________ and personality; to be in care of his mother and
to be brought up in faith of Church of England; should. he die during
minority, plantation after wife's decease to son Thomas and hrs. To
wife Elizabeth, extx., residue of personal estate during life; at her
decease, to be divided among eldest children, viz. Thomas, Robert,
daus. Sarah Greenwell, Anne Hall, Jany Gough and Elinor, wife of
Henry Greenwell. Test: Richard Osborne, Robert Hutchings, Michael
Realy.
Codicil, 8th Nov., 1725: Shd. wife die during minority of son
Benjamin, she may assign him as she thinks fit, security for
complying with above will being given.
Test: M. Jenifer, Jno. Read, Henry Realy

when approximating dates you have to use the facts rather than
guesses out of some book. I also disagree with some books that
claim that Henry Greenwell maried Eleanor Gough that is false, he
married Eleanor Clarke daughter of Robert Clarke and Sarah Combs as
the will above clearly points out.

For instance the claim that Henry Greenwell was born 1710 is false,
because will of Robert Clarke Sr. who married 1st to Sarah Combs and
2nd to an Elizabeth ? made it clear that Henry Greenwell was already
married by 1721. If Henry Greenwell was born 1710 he would not have
been mentioned in fathers will of 1709, nor would he be 11 years old
and married by 1721.

The will was made out in 1709, and all children are mentioned, I
believe. the will was probated in 1714 meaning no children were born
after 1714. I certainly would not give any children a birth date of
1714, My belief is they were all born before 1709.

Grace Greenwell who married Thomas Clarke was not born as early as
1672 as some books claim.

Ignatius GREENWELL m Mary DAVIS not Mary Dais

James GREENWELL married Sarah CLARKE ( daughter of Robert CLARKE and
Sarah COMBS)and already had two children by 1709. children Enoch, and
James

I would suggest you look at who they married and give approximate
dates to them based on what we know.

Actuall order or exact dates of birth are really not known. At least
I have not seen anything yet that can prove exact dates.

you must remember also that the will of Abraham Combs dated 1684 list
his daughter Sarah Combs as married to Robert Clarke. I doubt any of
their children were born before 1684, therefore dates of birth of the
3 Greenwell children would have to be approximated closer to those
with whom they married.

Let's not use sources that propogate error without putting correct
info beside it.
