Charles Jarboe, I - As of yet, no will has surfaced on him. Nor any
indication that he had a
child named Mary...
I do see that Susanna 's newphew Peter, Jr. married Susann's daughter
Frances in 1764
How is Charles Jarboe, I a cousin to his wife Susanna Brown?
Here are a few notes about Charles.....
2nd wife Unknown, and it appears that there is a 3rd.
Charles Jarboe must have been born by 1708, the year his father died, and
probably was born closer to 1700. He is in the St. Mary's Co., Debt Books
from their beginning in 1753 until their end in 1774. Yet very little is
know about him. [MJM 1974]
Charles appears to have had three wives. In 1748 he is named as a
son-in-law to John Horn, in Horn's Will. However, in 1752, when the Horn
estate is settled, Charles is no longer an heir. Presumably his wife had
died and left no surviving children.
The Horn girl could no have his first wife. In a deposition recorded in
Land Commissioners Record, Matthew Jarboe declares he was born about 1737 a
son of Charles Jarboe, and refers to his Uncles Peter, & Henry.
Land records indicate that Charles died about 1776. Although, no estate
papers
have been found for him [1974], there is a curious estate settlement for one
Susanna Jarboe, in 1796. She leaves personality to Matthew and also,
Joshua, Charles Jarboe, Frances Brown, and Ann Drady Stone or their heirs.
Her relationship is not stated, but she does tie these people together.
Another tie, is that they all belonged to the same catholic parish and their
children are all baptized in the same time period. They served as baptismal
sponsors
for one another, and Susanna, herself, is a frequent sponsor. She could
well be the third wife of Charles. Susanna Brown.
Charles had the 112 acres of St. Peter's Hills that he inherited from his
father. In 1762, he added 100 acres of Dry Docking. By 1774, his Dry
Docking tract had increased to 400 acres. This additional land he obtained
from John
Baptist Brown of James. Both Matthew and Joshua Jarboe hold this land in
later years. If Susanna Jarboe is Susanna Brown Jarboe and the widow of
Charles Jarboe, she is still not the mother of his Children.
The identity of that woman is still to be found.
The last definite record of Charles Jarboe In St. Mary's is found in the
Debt Books.
the record of taxes collected by the Lord Proprietor, in the yr 1774. There
is a Charles who took the "Oath of Allegiance" in 1778, but he is described
as Charles [Bayside] by the assessor and neither Dry Docking or St Peters is
near the Chesapeake Bay.
Mattew, Joshua and Charles Jr. did sign the Oath in 1778.
