Dear List,
I have conflicting references on a couple of points. I
hope some of you can look at transcripts of the original
documents to help resolve these questions.
1.) Edward Clarke's marriages:
Donnelly in "Colonial Settlers - St. Clement's Bay" pge
58 cites (patents 10:474) as a reference for his marriage to
Ann Shircliff in 1667. Linda Reno, in her E-mail of 2/28/98
has him married to Mary Kirkley.
Donnelly also on page 58 cites (Archives of Maryland
66:5-8) saying that in 1665 a William Brown left the care of
his daughter Mary Brown to John Warren and Edward Clarke.
According to Donnelly, Mary Brown married Thomas Kirkley and
died after the birth of their only child William.
Questions:
Who did Edward Clarke marry?
Was there more than one wife?
Was there ever a Mary Kirkley other than Mary Brown
Kirkley?
2.) John Drury's marriages:
We know that John Drury married Rachel Payne d/o Henry
Payne and Mary Assiter. John is named in the wills of both
Thomas Payne and Charles Payne two of Rachel's brothers.
We also know that at some point John Drury married Mary
Ford d/o Robert Ford and Mary Clarke. Mary was the
grandaughter of Edward Clarke above.
Some claim that Mary Ford was the widow of Jonathon
Seale when she married John Drury, citing the fact that
Jonathon Seale's inventory of 4/10/1711 names Robert Ford
and John Ford as next of kin.
1.) Does anyone have any information to establish a date
for Rachel's death?
2.) Does anyone have any data to pinpoint the date of
Mary Ford's marriage to John Drury?
3.) Does anyone have any additional data to prove a
marriage between Mary Ford and Jonathon Seale?
My point in all of this is to try to establish outside
dates for the births of the children of John Drury and
Rachel Payne. I have tentatively assigned dates no earlier
than 1692 and no later than 1715. This, however is only a
guess. I would love to be able to put these dates on a
firmer footing.
Thanks very much for whatever you can come up with.
Regards,
Don
