Dear List,

The list has been a bit quiet recently. I've been working on something
that would have a lot of implications for many of you and which should
generate some healthy discussion.

"William Thompson was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, the son of
John Thompson and Jane____. William Thompson married Barbary Langhorn,
the daughter of William Langhorn." (Colonial Settlers, St. Clement's
Bay, 1634-1780, St. Mary's County, Maryland by Mary Louise Donnelly).

She also states that Henry Spink (d. 1695) had married first, Eleanor
Edwards and second, Anastasia___ who married second, William Langham.

Margaret Fresco states that Anastasia, widow of Richard Newman, m.
second, Thomas Dillon.

All of this information, in my opinion, is incorrect.

First, John Thompson and Jane WELLMAN didn't have a son named William.
They had two sons--James and John, both of whom were minors at the time
of their father's death in 1712.

Second, William Thompson (d. 1716) had a wife named Barbara, but she was
NOT Barbara Langhorn.

Third, there is no evidence to support that Henry Spink had a second
wife named Anastasia. I believe that Ms. Donnelly assumed this based on
the will of his son, Edward. (See below).

Fourth, Ms. Fresco may have assumed the marriage of Anastasia ____to
Thomas Dillon based on the administration account of Richard Newman, but
note that they had different last names and that at the time of Thomas
Dillon's death, his widow was Rose.

Admin. accts. of Richard Newman 10/9/1702; mentions 1 orphan son.
Admin.: Anastasia Newman and Thomas Dillon (Skinner).

Here's how I believe it goes:

Michael Thompson (d. 1684) married Anastasia_____. Anastasia married
second, Richard Newman and third, William Langhorn. NOTE: The name is
also given as Langham, but I really believe it is Langhorn and that he
was either the brother or son of Daniel Langhorn.

5/20/1684: Admin. accts. of Michael Thompson, SMC. Appraisers were
Cuthbert Scott and Abraham Combs (Skinner).

Admin. accts. of Michael Thompson 8/9/1686; Admx., Anastasia Newman,
wife of Richard Newman (Skinner).

Michael Thompson and Anastasia_____had a son named William Thompson (d.
1716) who married Barbara_____.

Will of William Thompson, Breton Bay, SMC, 2/10/1716-3/7/1716. Son:
Michael, 40 ac., dwelling plantation (leased by father from John
Shercliffe for 90 years) during the remaining time of the lease and 100
ac., being 1/2 of "Hatfield Hills". If he dies without issue, land to
be equally divided, 1 part to wife, Barbara (Exec.) and 1 part to
father-in-law, William Langham. Wit.: Henry Spink, Jude Salten, Edward
Spink, William Abell. NOTE that he's named his son Michael--after his
father and that he's devised "Hatfield Hills" to him which had been in
the possession of William Langhorn in 1707. Further, he calls William
Langhorn (in this case Langham) his father-in-law which in this case
means stepfather.

I have been unable to locate one of the records to which Ms. Donnelly
refers. She states that on 3/8/1717, Barbary Thompson obtained the bond
on the estate of William Thompson with sureties Thomas Batson and Thomas
Walker (Test Pro 23:40, 133). I've tried every possiblity, with no
results. Does anyone else have it? If so, I'd appreciate it if you
would send it to me.

The administration accounts of this same William Thompson in 1717 name
his next of kin as Thomas Payne.

4/22/1717: Admin. accts. of William Thompson, SMC. Appraisers: Henry
Spink and Robert Ford. NOK: Thomas Payne (Skinner).

Will of William Langham, Breton Bay, SMC, 10/2/1717-11/1717. To:
Brother-in-law, Anthony Brown and William, his son; Brothers, Richard
Walker and Nicholas Miles; James Thompson, Richard Phenice, and Edward
Spink, personalty. Wife: Anastasia, residue of personal estate and
Exec. Wit: Henry Spink, William Abell, Elizabeth Spink.

1/4/1717: Admin. accts. of William Langham, SMC. Appraisers: James
French and Robert Ford. Approvers: Alexander Heathman and Thomas Dillon
(Skinner).

11/19/1664: "Hatfield Hill", 200 ac., Newtown Hundred, surveyed for
Peter Mills on the west side of Breton Bay. Conveyed to Michael
Thompson. Possessor: William Langhorn. 7/14/1730: 100 ac. to William
Bradburn from Matthew Vowles. 6/1/1742: 75 ac. to Hugh Pilkerton from
Michael Thompson. (SMC Rent Rolls, 1639-1771). NOTE THAT MICHAEL
THOMPSON DIED BY 5/20/1684, THEREFORE THIS PROPERTY WAS CONVEYED PRIOR
TO THAT TIME.

Will of Henry Spink, SMC 3/9/1693-10/26/1695. Son: Edward, 400 ac. home
plantation. Son: Francis, 200 ac. nr. hd. of St. Clement's Bay and near
William Shercliffe's. Sons: Henry and William 500 ac. by Thomas
Spaldings. Four sons afsd. residue of estate, real and personal. Son
Francis to be of age at 21. Execs: Sons, Henry and William. Wit:
Richard Newman, Anastasia Newman, Sarah Joy, John Jarboe.

Note that Richard Newman and Anastasia Newman were two of the witnesses
to this will. If you buy my theory that Anastasia, widow of Michael
Thompson, m. second, Richard Newman, then she could NOT have been the
wife of Henry Spink.

Will of Edward Spink, SMC, 11/18/1717-12/1/1717. Brother: Henry, 25
ac. near my dwelling plantation and also near the dwelling house of
Anastasia Langham. Daughter: Elizabeth, the north side of my land.
Son: William, the remaining part of my land. Daughters: Margaret and
Mary, "Hickory Hallows", which I bought from my brother Henry, equally.
Execs.: Brothers, Henry and Francis. Wit. Francis Nevitt, John
Poulton, William Abell.

Note that Edward Spink refers to the dwelling house of Anastasia Langham
(Langhorn). By this date, both her third husband, William Langhorn and
her son, William Thompson are both dead.

Now to try to figure out the rest of this.....

Who was Barbara_____?

Who was Anastasia____?

Who was Rose____ (second wife of Thomas Dillon)?

Why was Thomas Payne listed as one of the NOK of William Thompson in
1717?

Why were Thomas Dillon and Alexander Heathman listed as approvers of the
estate of William Langham?

How was William Langham (Langhorn) actually related to Anthony Brown,
Richard Walker, and Nicholas Miles. Did his sisters marry these men or
was his wife Anastasia related to them?

Thomas Payne was the son of Henry Payne (d. by 1/1/1691-2) and his wife,
Mary Assiter. He married Tecla Thompson, daughter of Arthur Thompson
(d. 1701) and his first wife, _____Stratford. (Per Donnelly, but I
haven't found anything yet that would definitely prove it.)

Frances Payne, also daughter of Henry Payne and Mary Assiter, married
Alexander Heathman by 1707.

Henry Payne had two daughters unaccounted for after his death. One was
Margaret and the other was Ann. I would surmise at this point that one
of them married Thomas Dillon, but I don't which one.

Thomas Dillon had been married prior to his marriage to Rose, widow of
Thomas Mooney (died by 4/28/1697). Rose wasn't, as far as I know, the
mother of any of his children. Rose and Thomas Mooney had 3 children:
Thomas who married first, Mary Wildman (dau. of ____Wildman and Martha
_____) and second, Mary Miles, dau. of John Barton Miles and Elizabeth
Gardiner; Mary who m. ____Spalding (possibly William); and an unnamed
daughter who m. William Spink (son of Edward).

I would really appreciate any input on this!
