Mary Ann,
I looked at the St. Augustine Church Baptisms, Marion Co., KY. These were
transcribed by Priest and Seminary students in the 1940's and did contain
the child's last name. The only possibility I could see was when the child
was listed using the mother's surname, the mother's name was listed first.
When the father's surname was used then the father was listed first. I am
not sure if it was that way in the original Latin record or if the
transcribers just listed it that way. But it might be worth looking at the
Holy Mary's records and seeing if there are cases where the mother's name
was listed first. If so, then I would think that the child went by his/her
mother's last name.
