As you probably have already suspected yourself, there is probably a
connection of Joshua Thompson to Sebastian Thompson as Joshua named one of
his sons Sebastian. The name Sebastian occurs primarily in the Thompson
family. The only other person I find with that name prior to 1850 is
Sebastian Griggs (d. 1785). I don't have his parents, but if I had to
guess, I'd be looking at his mother being a Thompson. In addition, I keep
looking at Joshua Graves and wonder if there wasn't a connection with the
Graves family.
Sebastian Thompson apparently didn't own property until after 1816.
Will of Ann Neale, SMC, 3/20/1816: Sister: Eleanor McWilliams, the land
adjoining "Wee Bit" called "St. Dorothy's" and the land where Joshua
Thompson now lives; all of the money I have by me; all of my beds and
furniture; and all of the provisions on hand.
As I recall "Wee Bit", or at least a part of it, was donated as the site for
Sacred Heart Church which means that at least in 1816, Joshua Thompson was
living in the area of Bushwood.
At the time of his death, in 1851, Joshua Thompson had acquired at least two
parcels of property:
Will of Joshua Thompson, SMC, 8/1/1851-10/1/1851. Wife: Dorothy Thompson,
all of my lands during her life. Children: George Thompson, Eleanor
Graves, James Thompson, Elizabeth Alvey, Helen Tennison, Sebastian Thompson,
Catherine Tennison, Joshua A. Thompson, Benedict J. Thompson, and Moses
Thompson, all of my personal estate which is to be sold and the proceeds
divided equally among them. They are to also receive the proceeds from the
sale of my land or to divide my land equally after the death of my wife.
Exec.: Son, Sebastian Thompson. Wit.: George W. Moreland, John T. Graves,
Lewis Graves.
Tom Jennings also recently provided me with this record which tells us the
name of the property that Joshua owned:
ST. MARY'S COUNTY,CIRCUIT COURT,(Equity Papers) Dates: 1853, 370, 523:
Joseph Spalding vs. Dorothy Thompson, George Thompson, James Thompson,
Sebastian Thompson, Benedict Thompson, Moses Thompson, Joshua A. Thompson,
Peregrine Graves, Eleanor Graves, Joel Alvey, Elizabeth
Alvey, Edward F. Tennison,Helen Tennison, John E. Tennison, and Catherine
Tennison. Estate of Joshua Thompson -"Young Mans Venture", "Baptist Hope".
Accession No.: 10,731-428-1/5; MSANo.:C1592-17; Location:1/57/9/62 (From Tom
Jennings).
My suggestion would be to check the land records at the Court House to see
how Joshua acquired the property. You may luck out and find it was done
after 1831 (fire) or a record was recreated to compensate.

I have subscribed to the list for years now, Just want to
throw Joshua Thompson out there to see if I can get past
my brick wall. Joshua was born 1778 in Leonardtown. he
married Dorothy Wathen February 9,1819 they had Sebastian
Thompson 1820, Catherine Thompson 1822, Joshua Alexander
Thompson 1825,Who married Mary Baily 1850, Benadict Joseph
Thompson 1828, and Moses Thompson 1833 Who married Martha
Radford 1857.
Joshua was also married to Catherine Edley.
I think my Thompsons were from Rocky Point. Any input
would be greatly appreciated. You guys do an awsome job
here, makes me proud to say I was born in Leonardtown Md.
Thanks Ellen
