Can anyone help me establish a connection between Maryland Catholics and
Bennett Mattingly?
This Bennett (b. 1795, Washington County, Ky., d. 14
August 1860, Grayson County, Ky.), married Mary Elenor Whitfill/Whitfield, a
daughter of Joseph Whitfill/Whitfield (b. Md.) and Elizabeth Riggs (m. 17
February 1798, Washington County, Ky). He was buried in St. Paul's cemetery
in Grayson County.
On 24 March 1828 Bennett was the co-administrator, with Catherine Knott of
the settlement of Henry Knott's estate. (Washington County Will Book D, p.
318) NOTE: This connection between Bennett Mattingly and the Knott family
seems to related to the SMC will of Priscilla Mattingly, discussed on
January 20.
In the 1850 census (7 August 1850, p. 8), "Bennet Mattingley" was 55 and a
farmer, born in Kentucky. The value of the real estate he owned was $300. In
his household was his wife - Mary E., 45, cannot read and write - and his
children: Umbalina, 18 (b. circa 1832, Ky.); Susan, 14 (b. circa 1836, Ky.);
Virginia, 12 (b. 13 October 1837, Ky.); Louisa, 9 (b. circa 1841, Ky.);
Marsella/Marcella, 6 (b. circa 1844, Ky.); and Frances E., 3 (b. circa 1847,
Ky.).
Living next door was Anselum Mattingley, 19 (b. circa 1831, Ky.), a farmer.
In his household was his wife, Mary A., 24 (b. circa 1826, Ky.), cannot read
and write - and their child, William T., 6 months (b. 1850, Ky.).
In the 1860 census (10 October 1860, pages 511/166), "Bennett Mattingley"
was 66, a farmer worth $600, real estate worth $300. Mary E. was 55, engaged
in "Housewifery," cannot read and write. The children at home were Susan,
24, "Serving"; Louisa, 19, "Serving"; "Marcilla," 17, attended school within
the year; and Frances, 14, attended school.
Anslem, 30, a farmer worth $250, was living next door. Mary A. is 34,
"Housewifery," cannot read and write. The children were: William T., 10,
attended school; Nancy E., 7, attended school; John, 4; Mary E., 2; and
Bennet 1/12 (b. September 1860, Ky.).
A Bennett Mattingly witnessed a will in St. Mary's County on 28 July 1787
(SMC Will Book A, p. 72). Is there a connection between the
two Bennetts?
Thank you,
Tom Stephens
