John:
I worked on the 1852-1890 indexes of the "St. Mary's Beacon" for the St.
Mary's County Memorial Library [1991-1994]. We indexed every-name in these
death notices. 9 January 1871 is the date of the PAPER, not the date of the
event. From the index there is no way to tell who died - McCully, one of the
Wilkinsons, etc. All are IN SOME WAY connected to whoever actually died,
unless there were more than one death being reported in the column. You
would have to get the full citation & read it to find out what was said.
MIS-USE OF THE INDEX can cause a real problem.
One time at the Historical Society in Leonardtown a very argumentative man
told me [to use your example here] that "It says in the Beacon Index at
Clinton McCully died ON 9 January 1871." I couldn't convince him he that
needed to check the "Beacon" issue of 9 January 1871 to find out what the
article was actually saying. As far as he was concerned, he "knew" Clinton
McCully died on 9 January 1871.
I see your John V. Wilkinson also in a "died" citation for 8 April 1869.
You'd need to check both 8 April 1869 and 9 January 1871 to find out what's
the actual story.
A very WILD GUESS is that somebody other than John V. died in 1871; perhaps
his daughter ? [Carrie ? Kate ?] & the daughter was survived by her mother,
John's widow, assuming it was John who died in 1869. But w/out the actual
article none of these is any more valid that the crazy conclusion the
argumentative man came up with.
You'll need to see the artcles in question to see what's what.
David
