Subject: [MDSTMARY-L] CAROLINA FORMERLY CALLED FLORIDA?
Date: Fri, 16 May 2003 19:16:41 -0700
Hello List,
I have a question for some kind soul on this list that is up on their history.
in a will a legacy is being given to "cousin John In Florida", the will was written in 1686.
In a book, an author explains the following:
Evidence indicates the "Florida" was the term formerly applied to Carolina.
A document written by Robert Sanford, Esquire, Secretary and Chief Register for the lords Proprietors of their County of Clarendon, in the Province of Carolina titled his "Introduction" in 1666: "A Relation of a voyage on the coast of the province of Carolina formerly called Florida."
So list is this fact, South Carolina was originally called Florida?
Thanks for any help,
Shirley
