Bill:
I really don't know what he lectured on. I came across his speaking in
Leonardtown a number of times while working on the Index for the "St. Mary's
Beacon" for the St. Mary's County Memorial Library. He may have spoken at
the St. Mary's Reading Room & Debating Society; I don't remember. The "Lost
Cause" got going "full steam" by the 1880's in St. Mary's County and there
was a lot of interest in things Confederate in the paper ... which, itself,
was pro-Confederate during the war and was twice suspended by the Lincoln
administration for publishing editorials negative to Lincoln's policies. The
war-time editor was sent to prison at Fort Warren, Massachusetts, for his
editorials. Johnson's popularity might be more that he was a high ranking
Marylander in Confederate service; I'm not sure a failed rescue attempt that
got no where close to St. Mary's County would be the real source of his
popularity. The fact that he was a Marylander in Confederate service might
be more the reason. You can find the Index to the "Beacon" on line, but
since it's an index and not an abstract, you'll need to find the actual
articles to see what's said in them. It's possible that the subjects covered
by Johnson are in the paper; I don't know. After all it was 8-9 years ago
that I worked on this project :o)
Hope I've helped you.
Take care,
David
