I'm not sure why you came to the conclusion that the first wife of James
Thompson (d. 1755) was a Brewer.

Not sure where you're getting the name Ann Hudson or Roseanna Hudson.
Doesn't work for me.

The wife of Francis Thompson was Ann_____, but I have no maiden name for
her. After the death of Francis Thompson, Ann____m. second, Nicholas
Manger. As Ann Manger, she made a will in 1791:

Will of Ann Manger, SMC,10/15/1791-12/22/1791. Daughter: Ann Carberry, all
of the estate now in the possession of Patrick Carberry during her life.
Grandson: James Carberry, one bed and furniture; one frying pan; and the
bond I have in my possession due from Mr. Philip Keyfor the use of my son,
Francis Thompson, but in case he should not return, for my grandson's own
use. Likewise, for his own use, three horses and one bed and furniture.
Grandson: Francis Carberry, one bed and furniture. Son: (but I think she
meant grandson) Nicholas Carberry, one bed and furniture. To: Rev. Austin
Jenkins, one bed and furniture: Goddaughter: Mary Hopewell, one blank
chintz gown and white apron. To: Eleanor Mattingly, one striped cotton
gown and petticoat. Daughter: Ann Carberry, the remainder of my wearing
apparel to dispose of as she pleases and all the remainder of my goods and
chattles during her life and then to be equally divided among her children.
Exec: Daughter, Ann Carberry. Wit: Joseph Walker, Jr. and Arthur Thompson.
(St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1791-1802 by Linda Reno and Joann Ellis
Humphries).

The will refers to her daughter, Ann Thompson who married first, Patrick
Carberry and second, Arthur Thompson, Jr. (after this will as Patrick
Carberry died sometime between 1792-1795). Her other child, Francis, Jr.
is, I believe, this one:

8/1795: Robert Ferguson, admin. of Francis Thompson, petitions the court to
sell the property of the dec'd to pay his debts. Granted. (Orphan Ct.
Rec., Fenwick).

She doesn't mention her daughter Roseanna Thompson (not Hudson), but she did
have a daughter by that name, based on the following:

11/1799: Mr. Greenwell, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the
following report: THE committee to whom was referred the petition of Arthur
Thompson, and Anne Thompson his wife, of Saint-Mary's county, have taken the
same into consideration, and beg leave to report the following facts: That
captain Nicholas Manger devised the whole of his estate, after the death of
his wife, to his two daughters in law, Rosanna Thompson and Anne Carbury;
that Rosanna Thompson died without will, or leaving issue; that Anne Carbury
is married to Arthur Thompson. Your committee further beg leave to state,
that captain Manger was entitled to four lots of land lying in Allegany
county, for his services as an officer in the late revolutionary war, but
that the last will and testament of the said captain Manger, disposing of
his estate as aforesaid, was only attested by two witnesses. Your committee
are of opinion, that inasmuch as the said captain Manger died without
leaving any relations within the United States, and as the petitioners have
obtained from the land-office of the western shore and escheat warrant for
the same, your committee think it reasonable that the state should
relinquish to the petitioners the caution money that will arise from
obtaining the said warrant; therefore submit to the house the following
resolution:

RESOLVED, That the state release its interest to the composition or
valuation of the land escheated by Arthur Thompson, and Anne Thompson, his
wife, of Saint-Mary's county, and the register of the land-office of the
western shore is hereby directed to issue patent on the land included in
said escheat warrant, with an estate to Arthur Thompson for life, remainder
to Anne Thompson, her heirs and assigns, saving all rights heretofore
acquired by any person to or in said land, or in any part thereof. By
order, J. S. BETTON, clk. (Votes and Proceedings, Archives of
Maryland, Vol. 98, p. 88).

I agree that Mary Thompson, dau. of James (d. 1755) was married to William
Roach.

Also agree that Mark Thompson m. Margaret Cissell (dau. of Arthur, d. 1750,
and wife, Mary).

I don't have a wife's name for Richard Thompson (d. 1785), but she wasn't
Rebecca Peake, sister of Ignatius (and dau. of William Peake, Jr., d. 1751
and wife, Mary). Rebecca died in 1799, with a will. She never married.

Will of Rebecca Peake, SMC, 5/18/1799-6/3/1799. Sister: Mary Ann Norris, a
negro man named James during her life. Niece: Rebecca Norris, daughter of
Mary Ann Norris, a negro man named James after the death of her mother and
my saddle and bridle. Nephew: William Norris (of Thomas), my horse and all
of the claims I have against William Norris (of Thomas). To: Elizabeth
Norris, wife of Joseph Norris, my chest and hat. Brother: Philip Peake, 12
pounds cash in the hands of Bennet Henning due from the hire of my negro.
To: Ann Abell, wife of Thomas Abell, my bed and furniture. To: Mr.
Jenkins, the priest, three pounds cash for the use of the church and to pray
for me. To: Eleanor Peake, three pounds cash to be paid by my Executor.

To: William Norris, son of Thomas Norris, nine pounds and 15 shillings cash
which William Combs owes me for the hire of my negro; what Cornelius Manning
owes me for keeping his house last year which I think is about four or five
pounds cash; and the eight pounds and five shillings that Joseph Downs owes
me. To: Elizabeth Norris, wife of Joseph Norris, five pounds cash in the
hands of Bennet Norris at Christmas. To: The negro man named James, five
pounds in the hands of Bennet Norris which is the balance of his hire for
the present year. Exec.: William Norris (of Thomas). Wit.: Ann Drayden
Norris, Ann Drayden Norris, John Greenwell (of James). NOTE: There were
two separate women named Ann Drayden Norris who witnessed and signed this
will. (St. Mary's Co., Maryland Wills, 1791-1802 by Linda Reno and Joann
Ellis Humphries).

Raphael Thompson m. Ann Neale????? You must have meant James Thompson, Jr.
(d. 1750), son of James Thompson (d. 1755) who m. Ann Neale, dau. of Raphael
Neale and Mary Brooke.

Hi! Thanks so much for the information. I have thought for a while now
that James Thompson (who (maybe) married Ann Carberry as his (maybe)
second wife circa 1734)had a number of additional children by his first
wife that he did not name in his will circa 1755.

I have come to the conclusion through circumstantial associations that
take place about 50 years later, that James Thompson (d. circa 1755)'s
FIRST wife was probably a BREWER and that the following were probably
children of that first marriage:
FRANCIS THOMPSON (d. circa 1767-68 and who I have as marrying ANN HUDSON
(daughter of ROSEANNA HUDSON who mentions her Thompson relatives in her
will, as I recall--ANN HUDSON THOMPSON married (2) NICHOLAS MANGOR);

MARY THOMPSON (who married WILLIAM ROACH--MARY ROACH and FRANCIS
THOMPSON were NOK on various Estate Inventories in the mid-18th century.

MARK THOMPSON (who married MARGARET CECIL (daughter of ARTHUR
CECIL--Mark's son, Ignatius Thompson "of Mark" was, eventually, Guardian
to one of the Thompson grandsons of Richard, below--at least, I'm pretty
sure this is the correct place for these people );

RICHARD THOMPSON (d. circa 1785 and who married REBECCA (probably
PEAKE--sister of IGNATIUS PEAKE).

CUTHBERT THOMPSON (see earlier messages).

Note that I could be completely off base with the above. I know it
disagrees with some other theories. But, I don't think I'm that far off
the mark ("Mark" get it?).

Also, I think the reason that JAMES THOMPSON only mentioned the kids he
did in his 1755 will was that (a) RAPHAEL THOMPSON (who married ANN
NEALE) had already died and the estate had not been settled and (b)
FRANCIS THOMPSON (d. c. 1767 and who I have as marrying ANN HUDSON) had
not gotten married yet. The rest of his kids were probably already
married and provided for.

So, what do you think? Any ideas/feedback welcomed. Thanks! John
Dobricky

There appear to be two Cuthbert Thompsons. Cuthbert, b. 1692, died by
12/17/1724 in Charles Co. (son of William Thompson and Victoria
Matthews). His wife was Elizabeth Yates (dau. of Charles Yates and Jane
___) who m. second, John Gwinn.

11/24/1722: William Thompson (Gent.) of SMC and his wife Eleanor to
Cuthbert Thompson (Gent.) son of afsd. William Thompson "Little Worth",
189 ac. (Early Settlers of Chas. Co., Bates).

12/10/1722: Deed from Cuthbert Thompson of CC, Gent., to Samuel Hanson
of CC, Gent. "Little Worth", 189 ac. (CC Land Rec., Liber L, #2).

8/30/1723: Cuthbert Thompson paid the estate of Randolph Garland, CC.

1/13/1724: Cuthbert Thompson and John Howard were appraisers of the
estate of George Bellows, CC.

5/1/1725: Cuthbert Thompson and John Howard were appraisers of the
estate of Richard Coe, CC.

12/17/1724-7/11/1726. Admin. accts. of Cuthbert Thompson, CC.
Appraisers: John Howard and Robert Yates. Creditors: William Chandler
and George Budd.
NOK: Thomas Thompson and William Thompson. Admx.: Elizabeth Thompson.

5/26/1727: Admin. accts. of Cuthbert Thompson, Charles Co. Received
from: Samuel Maddox, William Coody, John Gwinn. Payments to: William
Chandler Thomas Thompson, Mary Miller, George Budd, Daniel Jenifer,
Samuel Hanson.
Admin.: Joseph Gwinn and his wife, Elizabeth Gwinn.

Then we have this guy:

9/9/1751: Cuthbert Tomson paid by the estate of John Manning, SMC.

12/2/1754: Cuthbert Thompson paid the estate of John Bould, SMC.

6/6/1767-9/22/1768: Admin. accts. of Francis Thompson, SMC.
Appraisers: Robert Cole and John Power. Mentions: Archibald Wilson.
NOK: Cuthbert Thompson, Eleanor Thompson. Admin.: Zachariah Bond.

I have this Francis Thompson as the son of James Thompson by his second
wife, Ann Carberry. That would fit with the information Jean Edwards
provided below.

BUT.....who was Eleanor Thompson? Why doesn't James Thompson make any
mention of Cuthbert in his will in 1755?

Will of James Thompson, SMC 3/11/1755-5/16/1755. Son: Francis,
plantation known as "Hard Fortune" in SMC, 100 ac. Grandson: Charles
Thompson, land known as "Small Hope" on which I live, 100 ac. Son:
Francis and grandson Charles land known as "Neck" and adjoining to the
before mentioned land called "Small Hope" which piece of land was in the
year 1734 given to me by deed of gift and properly executed by John
Baptist Carberry, the then owner, 15 ac. Daughter-in-law: Ann Thompson
to take administration of the estate of her late husband, James
Thompson, to whom I was Executor. My two negroes named Simon and Betty
to be given to Francis Thompson and Ann Thompson. Residue of estate to
be divided between daughter-in-law, Ann Thompson and son, Francis
Thompson (both named Execs). Wit: Joshua Millard, John Turton, Anthony
Roberts. Francis Thompson refused executorship.

AND, is this Francis Thompson the same as this one:

Admin. accts. of Francis Thompson 6/30/1773; sureties were John Miles
and William Rapour; Admx., Ann Manger wife of Nicholas Manger (Skinner).

Further, was Ann, wife of Francis Thompson a daughter of Thomas and
Catherine Bond, and therefore a sister of Zachariah Bond?

7/23/1741: Admin. accts. of Thomas Bond, SMC. Sureties: Edmund
Bowling, John Hoskins. Distribution to: widow, 1/3. Residue to
(orphans): Zachary Bond, Jeremiah Bond, Thomas Bond, Ann Bond, Mary
Bond, Dryden Bond. Adm: Catherine Bond. Estate showed payments from
(among others): Owen Brady, William Molehorn, John Tennison.
