Here is some data from an e-mail I received from Janet Newman 2 December
1998. I "met" Janet on LI-Rooters where she was discussing the early Dingee
line on Long Island.
Janet stated that Edward Dingee of the Milestown District [7th Distruct] of
St. Mary's County was by "circumstantial evidence" the same person as Edward
B. Dingee, born in Beekman, Dutchess County, N. Y. He was the son of David
I. Dingee and Ruth. She connects Ruth to be Ruth Sniffen Dingee [1808-1901]
who died in the Bronx, N. Y.
David I. was the grandson of Robert Dingee, schoolmaster in Hempstead, L. I.
in 1786.
Janet says Edward's father David died 1840/50; but his mother Ruth lived
until 1901.
In an e-mail of 7 October 1998, she spoke of a Robert Dingee, an early
patentee of the Town of Hempstead, Queens [now Nassau] County, L. I. Robert
got 22 acres from the Town in 1676. This land was re-sold by the Town in
1700 to Robert's son Christopher Dingee; Robert died in 1701. Christopher's
1723 will wills this land to his son John.
Christopher [or possibly his father Robert ] appears to have become a Quaker
[Friend] and the family was associated w/ the historic Meeting at Westbury,
Queens [now Nassau] County, L. I.
In an e-mail of 7 July 2000 from Lee Terman, it is stated the Patentee
Robert had a son Robert and that son Robert had a son Robert [Robert I, II,
& III] Lee's e-mail states that the family settled in Westbury, L. I. during
the 1670's. This might be around the time they became Quakers. Westbury is
now in the Town of North Hempstead, but before Hempstead was divided in
1784, it was in the Town of Hempstead. Before 1899, it was in Queens County,
L. I.; now it is Nassau County.
I made copies of some of these e-mails and donated them to the St. Mary's
County Historical Society for their Dingee file. What I see if a family
living in Hempstead, Queens County, L. I. in the 17th and early 18th
century; then moving to Dutchess County, N. Y. in the early 18th century. We
see a return to Hempstead in the late 18th century; then a move to St.
Mary's County, Maryland in the mid-19th century.
