Mary Lee:
This may have been answered already ....
Newtown Neck is still mostly woodland, farmland, and marshland along the
shore. The section near St. Francis Xavier Church and Newtown Manor House is
particularly pretty, since the neck is so narrow you can see the water on
either side.
MD 243 actually goes only as far as the church; a county road continues
beyond the church for a mile or so; then it ends on private land.
MD 5 & MD 233 junction has developed over the past decade. An Exxon station
on the corner lights up the night-sky as if it belonged on Broadway
[Manhattan]; this was destroyed part of the rural character of St. Mary's
County.
Off 243 you have a huge range of housing; from small, older homes to huge,
very expensive modern houses. Besides Breton Bay, a few very new housing
developments of large, expensive houses have been built. Overall, however,
the rural character of the road seems to being kept .... although for how
long ?
The land down at the end of the Neck is still owned by the Jesuits and this
probably is in less danger of development unless they decide to sell ... I'm
sure they could get megabucks for their waterfront property.
David
